Protecting pump applications on a mine site from the effects of corrosion and erosion can be challenging even in the best conditions. Pump assemblies are often left open to corrosive elements and exposed to the harsh environmental and temperature conditions found above and below ground on a mine site.

At best, corrosion and erosion mean progressive oxidization and degradation of pump components —eventually requiring repair and refurbishment, and at worst, they can mean the catalyst for a premature pump failure.

The key to avoiding unnecessary downtime on pump applications caused by corrosion and erosion, explains BSC Product Manager Michael Rowe, is understanding pump processes in order to protect the components and boost their reliability.

In recent years, there has been a greater investment into research on how to improve pump reliability and reduce degradation through proper maintenance on pump applications.

One of the ways this is being achieved is by gaining a better understanding of the factors that affect the pumping process including protective coating and surface technologies.

“Nearly every heavy industrial process involves pumping liquids in some area, which is why it is important to take appropriate measures when sealing and covering the connection points on pump systems,” says Michael.

“Critical componentry of pump assemblies like pipe joints, threaded assemblies, flange work, and bolted assemblies need to be securely covered to prevent corrosion and incidental damage from the elements long‑term.”

“Degradation from corrosion is one of the primary reasons for replacement of parts and components on pump assemblies, particularly if you have pumps that are transferring fluid from underground applications and causing oxidization to the metal components,” he elaborates. “Bolted assemblies in particular, are always susceptible to corrosion if left exposed, which makes it difficult for technicians to pull apart when they go to do maintenance.”

Motion Australia’s service technicians at CBC, BSC, WebsterBSC, and Seal Innovations are trained and qualified to install, maintain and monitor pump applications. One of the ways they achieve this is by partnering with companies like 3M who are active in investing in the development of advanced pump support products.

A good example of 3M’s innovation, according to Michael, is the development of corrosion protection tape that works like traditional electrical tape in appearance and consistency but incorporates advanced materials science into the construction.

“The 3M™ Scotchrap™ Vinyl Corrosion Protection Tape is simple in appearance, but it is a very versatile product that can be beneficial in protecting various applications on site— from pipework and pumps; to flange work and bolted assemblies; to underground electrical and cabling,” explains Michael. “This is a high tack adhesive product that will bond to itself to prevent an ingress of moisture and corrosion on these applications.”

“If there are electrical inlets and outlets from pump motors, or cabling product buried into the ground, corrosion protection tape will create a barrier against ground chemicals and increase the longevity of the pump application,” he furthers, adding: “This is an item that I would consider it a staple for improving pump reliability and efficiency.”

3M developed the Scotchrap™ Pipe Primer to ensure the surface of an application will be optimal and receptive to the adhesive properties of the Vinyl Corrosion Protection Tape.

Together, the 3M™ Scotchrap™ Pipe Primer and the 3M™ Scotchrap™ Vinyl Corrosion Protection Tape are a tough combination of primer and PVC tape that resist corrosive salt water, soil acids, alkalies, chemicals and vapors encountered commonly on heavy industrial pump and motor applications.

In addition to this, Scotchrap Vinyl Corrosion Protection Tape is resistant the effects of impact, abrasion, and punctures, and can withstand outdoor weather and sunlight.

With so many beneficial material properties in one roll, the 3M™ Scotchrap™ Vinyl Corrosion Protection Tape is truly a must-have for corrosion protection and resistance on pump applications. It is ideal for technicians who are responsible for maintaining pump applications and processes and looking to improve their reliability and efficiency.
